The Mampong School for the Deaf is grappling with serious overcrowding which is affecting the well being of inmates and their studies.
Classrooms which are supposed to accommodate a maximum of ten students now take 35, a situation which is way above the accepted class size of Special Schools which ranges from 8 to 15 per class.
The Headmaster of Akwapim Mampong Demonstration School for the Deaf, Abraham Yemoson disclosed this when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Gender, Children and Social Protection paid a working visit to the School.
Mr. Yemoson said, out of 120 teaching staff, only twenty live in the school making supervision after school hours difficult.
He further revealed that current student population from kindergarten to JHS stands at 460, a situation which puts pressure on inadequate furniture and other facilities.
The Headmaster of the School, therefore, appealed to government to complete both an abandoned girl’s dormitory which was started in 2007 and the boy’s dormitory being constructed through the Common Fund.
Interacting with the MPs, the pupils complained about their toilet facility which they said is in a deplorable state. They revealed to the MPs that teachers in the school take a chunk of sachet water being supplied by a benevolent woman to the school to their various homes.
At Mamfe Presby Primary School, the Chairman of the Committee who doubles as MP for Atwima Kwanwoma, Dr. Appiah Kubi, in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana called for proper school canteens and kitchen at the basic school level after the Committee had toured the school to ascertain the pupil’s condition and the state of the School Feeding Programme.
The MP for Krachi West in the Volta Region, Adwoa Ntoso in an interview with Radio Ghana said the committee has identified a peculiar problem associated with the quality and quantity of the food being served to pupils at various public schools across the country.
