The Ghanaian Times expresses concern about the level of attention given to the December 17 Referendum. It makes reference to a survey conducted by the Centre for Democratic Development, CDD which revealed that only few Ghanaians know about the upcoming Referendum leaving over 60 per cent unaware. The Times is worried because it believes what the Referendum is going to deal with is very significant and likely to change how local politics is conducted in the country. The paper indicates that there is a lot of miscommunication about what the referendum is all about. It, however, calls on the National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE, Information Service as well as Civil Society Organisations to intensify their education for the public to fully understand the referendum. This is to ensure that the exercise is successful no matter the outcome.
The Daily Graphic calls on Government to avoid repetition of budgetary crisis as election year draws closer. It notes that Ghana has experienced fiscal slippages in election years of the fourth republic which have caused a lot of setbacks in the Gross Domestic Product. The paper is of the view that though the Fiscal Responsibility Act has been passed to contain fiscal slippages next year, there is the need for managers of the economy to adhere strictly to the budget estimates and their implementation since anything short of that will be disappointing.
