Deputy Minister of Transport, Daniel Nii Kwatei Titus Glover, has launched the 2019 Christmas Road Safety Campaign at the Kaneshie Lorry Station in Accra.
He attributed the rampant road accidents and the attendant fatalities to indiscipline, total disrespect for Road Traffic Regulations and carelessness on the part of motorists.
Mr. Titus Glover reminded the public that road safety is a shared responsibility.
The Deputy Minister of Transport, Titus Glover, said government is concerned with the thousands of people who die and those who are maimed annually through road accidents. It is for this reason that government fully supports the campaign to stop road accidents now ‘Stop Road Accident Before It Stops You’.
The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority May Obiri Yeboa, presented a worrying situation of accidents and fatalities for the first 10 months of this year.
She said all the 400 NABCO and national service personnel with the authority will be deployed nationwide to patrol some major roads as part of its outreach programme during the yuletide to reduce road accidents.
The Director of Research, Monitoring and Training at the Police MTTD, Supt. Alexander Obeng, said the Police will intensify enforcement of road traffic regulations throughout the country during this yuletide.
He said Police successfully prosecuted three thousand 588 motorists with 32 of them serving jail terms and 2.9 Million cedis realised from court fines.
National Road Safety Authority has given the Police MTTD some critical equipment to be used in the enforcement of road traffic regulations.
Supt. Obeng took the drivers at the Kaneshie Lorry Station through the uses of some of the equipment received.
The drivers at the Kaneshie Lorry Station were given the opportunity to ask the officials questions or make suggestions.
One of them was the need for the NRSA to award drivers who conduct themselves well on the road.
