Ghanaian Professional golfers are expected to be given stiffer opposition from their foreign competitors for prize money of ¢40,000 for the 2019 edition of the PGA Golf Tournament following the official launch on Thursday, November 21 in Accra.

The annual event tees off at Tarkwa Darmang golf course and it is attracting 79 professional golfers including 14 foreigners from Zimbabwe, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, Togo, Nigeria and Gabon competing for laurels in the 4 day event which runs from 4th – 7th December, 2019.

Past winners like Vincent Tonga, Amos Kobla and Kodjo Barnni are geared up with their artistic swing of their golf clubs as they aim to win the ultimate cash prize and to reaffirm the Ghana’s dominance in this competition since its inception.

Each golfer would be taken through a vigorous 18 hole per day for the 4 days to determine the winner of the 2019 edition.

Speaking at the launch, Executive Vice President & Head of West Africa for Gold Fields Ghana Limited, Alfred Baku, said the attractive nature of the competition has lured a lot of professional and amateur golfers to participate in this year’s event.

“We are motivated to support golf which is because it is part of the least mentioned sport in this country. We have talents and the only way can unearth is through tournaments like this.”

“If you look at the tournament year in year out, the standard keeps improving and that has been our motivation to ensure that we bring a lot people to the game of golf and for our professionals can also compete at the highest level.”

Meanwhile, the president of the Professional Golfers Association, Anthony Mintah, has expressed optimism of a Ghanaian winning the championship to underscore the host and win cliché.

“It is my wish to see a Ghanaian winning the ultimate but I strongly believe it would be a keenly contested tournament. We should expect strong competition looking at the approach and the history of these golfers.”

“Promoting of the game has been high on the agenda.”

Attendance would be massive as Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II and CEO of Gold Fields Ghana Limited Nick Holland are expected to grace the occasion.
