Twenty-one civil society organisations have backed Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo amid a controversial investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office, EOCO.
A statement from the CSO’s stated that the circumstances surrounding the alleged infractions being investigated and the handling of the investigations by another law enforcement agency raises concern that there is an attempt to undermine the work of the Auditor General.
The CSOs include Ghana Integrity Initiative, Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, SEND GHANA, and Media Foundation for West Africa.
The statement said recent turn of events will not deter him from continuing with his work to protect the public purse.
The statement comes amid an ongoing feud between EOCO and the Auditor-General over alleged procurement breaches by the Auditor General.
Mr Domelevo has since dragged EOCO to court, questioning its mandate to investigate his office.
The CSOs, in their statement supported the Auditor-General’s position, arguing any such investigation is the mandate of the Special Prosecutor.
The CSOs said the procurement breaches have already been investigated by the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) where it was established that there was value for money in the purchase of the vehicles under contention.
The CSOs believe Mr Domelevo’s fight against alleged corruption in some key state institutions “have courted anger against him amongst ruling party supporters.
The CSOs, however, said, no one is above the law and everyone should be held to the same standards of accountability.
