The Vice Chancellor of the Sunyani Technical University (STU), Ing. Professor Kwadwo Adinkra-Appiah has revealed that, the upgrade of the then polytechnic into a Technical University has resulted in enrollment increased over the last four years.
According to him, admission of students is up by 20 per cent this year.
He continued that Engineering, Science and Technology, as well as TVET and Applied Science programs recorded a total of 1,570 students representing 68.3 per cent of the total enrolment which he described as positive and puts the university on course to fulfill its core mandate as a Technical University.
The Vice Chancellor said this during the 24th Matriculation of the Sunyani Technical University in the Bono Region.
In all, 2,299 students were formally matriculated out of a total of 3,137 applications.
The Matriculants were made up of 1,454 males and 845 females.
Addressing the students, Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Adinkra-Appiah highlighted some new academic programs set to be introduced by the University to meet the needs of industry.
He said, the university is working toward securing accreditation from the National Accreditation Board to enable it introduce new programs.
“The management of the University is to introduce new requisite academic programs to fall in line with needs of industry and in immerging areas that will help expand the national autonomy’’.
‘’Faculty of Health has therefore been charged to design innovative programs that will attract more applicants to make the University a University of choice’’. He added.
He bemoaned the huge gender imbalance in engineering programs and also urged the Government to provide the university with financial clearance to enable it employ more teaching staff to handle the expected huge numbers of students from the Free SHS program.
The Vice Chancellor also told the fresh students, the University has introduced a Student Support Fund (SSF) to address financial challenges confronting students.
He added that, management of the University has primed its key staff and is liaising with the Security Agencies to ensure safety and security of all students in the University.
Prof. Ing. Appiah further advised all students to adhere to the rules of the Institution and eschew all negative acts.
He said, students who contravene the university’s ethics shall be dealt with drastically.
The event was attended by the University Management and Relatives of the Students.
