Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he is still haunted by the penalty miss at FIFA World in 2010 in South Africa.
Nine years after missing the chance to send Ghana to the semifinal of the FIFA World Cup, the 34-year old revealed he can’t forget that day.
“Every day. It haunts me every day. I will never forget this. It has become part of my life. Till Ghana qualifies for the semi-finals because we had a chance and I blazed away (the shot grazed the horizontal and flew into the Johannesburg night sky),” Gyan said
“Even when I stop playing, it will haunt me. Even when I am seeing football on TV and there is a penalty in a normal league game, it just pops into my mind. It is like, ‘I don’t want to see a penalty in football because it connects my mind to 2010’. What is keeping me going is that I am strong mentally.”
Asamoah Gyan has since led the Black Stars to the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015 and helped the team qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 2014.
He now plies his trade in India for Super League side NorthEast United.
