The Electoral Commission (EC) is embarking on a limited voter registration ahead of the December referendum for the creation of the proposed six new regions.

The registration is taking place within 47 districts offices of the EC in the affected areas.

The EC is mandated by law to hold the referendum to determine whether the voters in the proposed new regions support the creation or not.

The registration started Sunday and will end on Tuesday, September 25.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has begun the limited registration exercise at Chereponi amidst tight security.

The chief insisted that his district cannot be added to the proposed North Eastern region and prevented the EC officials from starting the exercise.

The DCE in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana in Tamale revealed that, the DISEC has provided security for the EC to begin the exercise.

He said the assembly is willing to join the North East region, adding that, the allegiance of the traditional authority to the Gbewaa Palace will not be affected.

The Chiefs of the area are however not willing to join the proposed North East region saying they were never consulted.

The chief of Wenchiki in the Chereponi District said they only heard rumours that Chereponi will be added to the North East region.

The Chiefs of the area have therefore petitioned the Gbewaa Palace, the Regional House of Chiefs and the National House of Chiefs to intervene in the matter.

The EC’s limited registration exercise started across the proposed new regions Sunday, September 16.

In the northern region, all the twelve affected districts, except Chereponi started smoothly.
