The Ghana Health Service (GHS) will from today embark on a five-day polio vaccination exercise in Oti and four other Regions.

The exercise is targeted at curbing the resurgence of Poliomyelitis in all eight districts of the Oti region following the emergence of a case in the Nkwanta North district.

The condition which was first detected in an eight-year-old child in the district prompted the Ghana Health Service and its partners to undertake a vaccination exercise for children in the Nkwanta North and South Districts in December 2019.

About 148 thousand 438 children have been estimated to participate in the house to house exercise.

A Deputy Regional Director of Health, Dr. Yao Ofori-Yeboah, said volunteers have been trained and equipped to undertake the exercise.

The Volta Regional Health Directorate also indicated that a multifaceted approach to publicise the exercise is being engaged to create more awareness on the vaccination.

The officer in charge of the Expanded Program on Immunization, Anthony Penin said pockets of polio are being recorded in parts of the country and logistics have been provided to combat it’s spread.

The exercise will take place concurrently in the Bono East, Ahafo and Savannah Regions.
