Fire last night gutted dozens of wooden structures at Dagomba line in Kumasi, displacing about 500 head porters, popularly referred to as kayayei.
The area is made up of about 200 cluster of wooden structures inhabited mostly by head porters and scrap dealers.
Our Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Razak Baba reports, that three fire tenders were at the scene to bring the inferno under control.
Firefighters, however, had a tough time accessing the source of the fire. Most of the victims were returning from the market when the fire started.
The haphazard settlement at the slum makes it almost impossible for fire tenders to gain access to the area in case of a fire outbreak.
This is not the first time fire has gutted structures at the Dagomba line. A few months ago, a similar situation confronted the head porters there.
Meanwhile, a pylon has been uprooted as a result of the fire, as power has been disconnected in the area.
