The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says government will not weaken its stance on galamsey and will welcome the input of the Media Coalition.

“The threat posed to the future of our country by galamsey is grave and we cannot shirk our responsibility.”

President Akufo-Addo said these on Thursday, February 20, when he delivered his fourth State of the Nation Address in parliament.

The State of the Nation Address, an annual event, gives the President an opportunity to render final account for his leadership over the last year and also project the plans of the government for the coming year.

He said it would be unrealistic to suggest that there should be no mining in Ghana.

”Our battle was not against mining itself; however, taking the minerals out should not lead to the pollution of our water bodies and the destruction of our forests.”

He added: “When we came into office, galamsey activities were rampant across the country. The previous NDC government had given up the fight. We deemed, however, that the situation was intolerable.”
