The MP for the Sagnarigu Constituency, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini says former Presidents J. A Kufour, the late Prof Atta Mills and John Mahama stand tall in their contributions to the peaceful resolution of the Dagbon Crisis.
He says it was the current president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who tied up the loose ends of the problem.
Moving the motion for the debate on President Akufo-Addo’s 2020 State of the Nation Address to commence on, MP for Ofoase/Ayirebi, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said: “As part of the President’s agenda to ensure peaceful coexistence, he stimulated the resolution of the Yendi crisis and the enskinment of the new Yaa-Na Mahama Abukari II. Dagbon has commenced the journey to glory and we thank the President for his leadership.”
“It was a conflict that over a decade tore brother and brother apart. It cost us tens of millions of Ghana cedis and halted all progress along the area.”
But addressing journalists after a minority boycott of the SONA debate on Tuesday, February 25, Alhaji Fuseini, who is also a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), maintained: “Akufo-Addo was just lucky that at the tail end of the process, he became the President.”
“You can credit President Kufuor when the conflict broke out, when the criminal activities of March 27, 2002, broke out for setting up Wuako Commission which made some findings and actually even got some people arrested.”
“Secondly, he set up the eminent chiefs committee. So you can credit President Kufuor even for starting something that led to a solution.”
“It was President Atta Mills who made an effort to even go beyond the traditional aspects and ventured into the realm of the criminality, the perpetrators of that heinous crime. 18 people were arrested and paraded before court, the highest that anybody could go, in respect of the Dagbon issue to get to the criminal justice matter where the criminal perpetrators of the crime were arrested and brought to book.”
“That happened under the NDC, under President Mills,” he noted.
“President Mahama came and continued. The road map which finally led to the success was given impetus under President Mahama.”
“What contribution particularly did the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo make for him to claim the credit?”
“He was just lucky that at the tail end of the process, he became the President and so he took credit for the fact that the process was terminated at that point. That’s all.”
