Ghanaian Women have been urged to involve themselves in politics and be confident in the country’s policy making.
According to the Community Zone Manager for Touton, Mrs Hilda Dapaah, the 37 female parliamentarians against 238 men in Parliament is hindering gender equality in policies hence the need for women to get actively involved in the decision making process to contribute immensely to the country’s development.
Mrs Dapaah said this in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana after a cooking contest held in Nkrankrom in the Bono East region and Nsagobesa in the Bono region to mark the International Women’s Day.
Ghana joined the rest of the world to celebrate International Women’s Day yesterday. The day is marked globally on March 8 every year to celebrate women’s achievements from political, economic and socio-cultural space.
The theme for this year’s celebration is: “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”.
The first International Women’s Day occurred in 1911 and was supported by over one million people. 2020 is a pivotal year for advancing gender equality globally. Even though significant gains have been made globally, gender inequality continues to hold women and girls back and deprives them of basic rights and opportunities professionally.
Child’s Rights International in partnership with Touton Eliho and Global Women Development promotors (GLODEP) held a cooking contest at Nkrankrom in the Bono East and Nsagobesa in the Bono region to join the world in the celebration of the International Women’s Day. Some of the delicacies prepared by the women include Yam and Kontomire stew, Tuo Zaafi, Fufu with ground soup among others.
Ms Catheryn Naa Atswei Okine who is a Field officer for Child right international and a coordinator for Bono and Ahafo region tells Radio Ghana, they have been able to support some single mothers in the country. She said a data collection has been done in the Bono region to fish out women who need intervention.
The Community Zone Manager for Touton, Mrs Hilda Dapaah said the cooking contest was to project the contribution of healthy meal. She said Ghana has come to the stage where women don’t have to be relegated to the background during decision making.
She stressed on the need for women to have confidence and take keen interest in national issues as well as leadership positions.
