The Kotoka International Airport is preparing to resume domestic flights on Friday, May 1. The airport was shut down for commercial flights as part of the directives implemented to help stop the spread of the coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
As part of the preparations, Zoomlion Ghana Limited yesterday disinfected and fumigated the airport in readiness for the commencement of domestic air travel this weekend.
A similar exercise also took place at the Kumasi and Tamale airports.
The disinfection exercise, which is a government contract to the company, was carried out in the entire KIA area, including the floors, walls and counters at the three terminals.
Inspecting the exercise at the KIA, the Minister of Aviation, Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, said the exercise was part of the protocols set by the President’s taskforce to deal with the COVID-19 situation in the country.
Mr Adda said after the exercise, the airport company, supported by the port health officials “would make sure that all things that need to be installed to support the implementation of the protocols would be put in place”
“That is to say all the handwashing devices, nose masks and sanitisers, among other things, should be made available. They will be checked by the airport company and the port health authorities to ensure that they are all in place before we start operating,” he said.
Mr Adda indicated that the country would resume domestic flights first, saying, “ in all of Africa we are the only country that closed down the airports and are about to begin flights, so we want to do it well, to show the way and be an example for other countries to follow.”
He said the ministry was very happy to have Zoomlion as a partner to undertake such an exercise.
“The disinfection is also going on in Kumasi and in Tamale. They will move to Wa and Takoradi very soon. Provisions have been put in place to make sure everything is in place before we commence domestic flights,” the minister concluded.
