The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has praised the State Broadcaster, GBC, for making it possible to celebrate this year’s Eid ul Fitr.
The usual conventional celebration of the Eid at the Black Star Square could not be held due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“I commend the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation for stepping up to the plate, and making it possible, through virtual means, to celebrate this year’s Eid, just as it did in facilitating the virtual celebration of this year’s May Day.”
President Akufo-Addo said this when he joined Muslims in virtual Eid Prayers led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu, at the GBC Studios in Accra, which was broadcast live nationwide.
“These are the proper uses of a public broadcasting network.”
“This year’s Ramadan fast will remain unique in Islamic history as one that was observed without the usual activities and buzz that come with the Ramadan fast,” he added.
For his part, Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Lawyer Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, said the state broadcaster has been able to rekindle in the people of Ghana that hope has not totally been lost.
“The May Day celebration was made alive because of GBC. Today, Eid has been made alive because of GBC and these are some of the things that as a public service broadcaster, GBC has to take the initiative.”
“I’m happy as Chairperson of NMC even in these bad times, something good is happening and Ghanaians are beginning to see that when we say we should contribute to support GBC, the argument that I don’t watch GBC or I watch another station should not be entertained. These are the things that without GBC, the other stations would not have been able to carry this event live.”
“Whatever that it takes to make GBC a true public service broadcasting station must be done,” he added.
