Today is Africa Union Day. It is a day set aside to celebrate the founding of the Organisation of Africa Unity, now the African Union, on May 25, 1963.

The day is marked annually as ‘Africa Day’ with programmes to remember Africa’s heroes who fought for Africa’s unity and led the liberation from colonial rule.

It is also a day to reflect on the common challenges’ that the continent faces in a global environment.

The African continent will mark the 57th Anniversary of the AU with virtual and online celebrations due to the coronavirus pandemic that has bedeviled the World. It will be under the theme: ”Silencing The Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development and Intensifying the Fight against the COVID -19 Pandemic”.

Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo  Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, a founding member of the AU was a chief proponent of not only the unification of the continent, but sustaining  of global peace.
