The Minister of Communication, Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful has defended her directive to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation to reduce its TV channels from six to three on the National Digital Terrestrial Television Platform.

The minister has come under severe criticism from the Minority in Parliament and a segment of society calling on her to withdraw the directive, but the minister insists it is in the best interest of the state.

In Parliament on Wednesday, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said the move is to free up space on the National Digital Terrestrial Television Platform which is now full.

She indicated that GTV’s channels will be returned when work on the planned expansion of Ghana’s National Digital Terrestrial Television Platform is completed.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram and a member on the Communications Committee in Parliament Sam George disagreed with the Minister and insisted that the move is wrong.

Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on June 26, 2020 received a letter from the Minister of Communication directing it to reduce its operating digital television channels from six to three.

Currently, GBC operates six digital channels, namely GTV, GBCNews (24-hour news channel, formally GBC24), GTV Life (a religious and culture channel), GTV Sports+ (Sports channel), Obonu TV (People of Greater Accra channel) and GTV Ghana Learning Television (JHS and SHS students channel established during the COVID-19 lockdown).
