The Ministry of Gender and Social Protection is in the process of coming up with a law to be laid before parliament to deal with the lynching of alleged witches.
Though no timelines have been given for the proposed law the Sector Minister, Cynthia Morrison said a legislation is the only way to protect such people due to the dicey nature of the situation.
Madam Morrison was speaking at the Meet-the-Press series in Accra.
Lynching as result of being branded as a witch have been rampant in some parts of Ghana.
Others have also ended up in witches’ camps with the fear of being lynched and stigmatized by family members.
The Gender Ministry over the years has been faced with the difficult task of closing down such structures due some deep rooted traditions. However, the recent lynching of Madam Akua Denteh has sparked the debate for closure of such camps and also provide protection for such persons.
When she took her turn to address the issue, Madam Morrison said getting to the grounds brought out concerns which go beyond just closing down the witches camps.
She said the decision to come up with a legislation is one of the surest solutions to end such barbaric acts.
The Gender Minister said government is also working to renovate some of the camps in order to provide a descent living for such persons.
A task force has also been set up to sensitize communities who engage in such acts.
On the provision of one hot meal for students, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection says it has developed a complaint form where it receives daily reports on government’s one hot meal initiative for Junior High School (JHS) students.
These results, the Ministry hopes to work on to improve the meals of the students.
Speaking at the Meet-the-Press series in Accra, Sector Minister Cynthia Morrison asked the public to disregard social media reports that meals for the students are not nutritious.
Madam Morrison also touched on arrears owed caterers of the School Feeding Program which she said are being addressed.
She explained that the reason some caterers have not been paid is due to the wrong data they provided.
She asked such caterers to bring documents of proof before they will be paid.
