The National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO has issued a two-week ultimatum to tenants to evacuate from a single storey building around Adum in the Ashanti Regional capital Kumasi due to structural defects.
NADMO also directed the property owner to demolish the building else NADMO will take action.
However, at a news conference, claimants of the building accused NADMO of acting in bad faith.
The building, located within the prime area of Adum, is an old structure belonging to a family from the Central region. It houses many tenants for both residential and commercial purposes.
Twenty-one (21) of the occupants operate stores trading in various wares in addition to a worship center.
However, the Ashanti Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organiation (NADMO), in a letter dated August 18 and addressed to the occupants and store owners noted that the single-storey building has been identified to be very weak asking them to evacuate.
An evaluation conducted concluded that the structure is very weak as a result of neglect. It has therefore become a death trap and poses an imminent danger to the occupants and other members of the public.
Reacting to the Notice, the property owners disputed the claims by NADMO that the building is weak.
