Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu says the only way the chieftaincy institution could remain relevant is for chiefs to avoid soliciting financial support from politicians.
He said when Chiefs over-depend on politicians, it affects their independence and credibility as fathers of the people.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu was speaking at the inauguration of the renovated edifice of the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi.
The building complex donated to the House by the late Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware in 1969 was renovated by government at a cost of 3.5 million Ghana Cedis.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu maintained that the edifice was initially meant to house Kumasi Traditional Council.
The President of the National House of Chiefs, Tobge Afede, said the house will soon modernize the customary laws to suit modern trends of governance.
He said the current administration has been able to create a website for the house, settle disputes among chiefs, assisted government in the fight against Covid-19 and galamsey.
Togbe Afede was happy about the passage of the Chieftaincy Bill 2409 to expand the National House of Chiefs to accommodate house of chiefs from the six newly created Regions.
The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kofi Djamesi said GHC800,000 has been released for the completion of new National House of Chiefs staff accommodation project at Asenua at the Kwabre District.
Funds have also been released to pay allowances of judicial committee to deal with accumulated chieftaincy cases.
The Ashanti Regional, Minister Simon Osei Mensah appealed to chiefs to stop the double sale of lands that leads to land disputes.
