The EC continues to face criticisms following the 100 percent increase in filing fees for Presidential candidates.
On GBC’s Current Affairs Programme, ‘Focus’, panelists, were of the view that the argument by the EC that inflation has affected what was charged four years ago is baseless.
Senior Lecturer at the Department of Political Science, University of Ghana, Dr. Seidu Alidu is calling on the Electoral Commission to justify the rationale for raising the filing fee for Presidential candidates by one hundred percent than the mere attribution to inflation.
He said an explanation from the EC by breaking down what the ¢100,000.00 filing fee will be used for will end the heavy criticism of the Electoral Commission.
Dr. Seidu said the hue and cry by the smaller parties and most well-meaning Ghanaians could have been avoided if there had been consultation with the parties.
Professor at the Faculty of Law, Governance and International Relations, Kings University College Accra, Professor Kwame Agyenim-Boateng was of the view that, the EC should have used the political party’s law to make the smaller parties compliant with the electoral laws instead of using high fees to get them off the ballot paper.
