The Electoral Commission (EC) has cautioned stakeholders especially political parties to desist from declaring results of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
This is because the EC is the only body with the mandate to do so.
Speaking at the EC’s ‘Let the Citizens Know’ in Accra, Chairperson of the Commission Mrs Jean Mensa called on the police to ensure that political parties who declare the results are punished.
She said the Commission has targeted a turnout of more than 85% in the election.
The last edition of the EC’s ‘Let the Citizens Know’ series before Ghanaians go to the polls was used to brief the public on the preparedness of the Commission for the December 7 polls.
The Commission said it has indicated its readiness for the election.
Giving highlights of its preparations, Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa said they concluded the printing of the ballot papers two weeks ago, created 10,000 more polling stations to ease congestion at the polling stations and created a toll free call center which will be operational on election day among others.
Most of these she mentioned, are unprecedented in the history of the Commission. She called for the enforcement of laws that ban political parties from declaring election results.
Mrs Mensa gave the Commission’s expectation in terms of turnout on December 7.
The Commission reminds all persons who have lost their voter ID cards that they are eligible to vote in the centers they registered because their details have been captured on the biometric verification devices.
Meanwhile, the EC says it will provide nose masks to individuals in rural areas who show up to vote without one.
This is in response to concerns raised about the possibility of political parties sharing branded masks on December 7.
To this end, the Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa has cautioned political parties not to share nose masks at polling stations on election day because it is illegal.
She was speaking at the EC’s ‘Let the Citizens Know’ series in Accra.
