Four different groups have petitioned the National House of Chiefs against aspects of the processes for the creation of new regions. While three of the petitioners are against any attempt to compel them to be part of the new regions, another group from geographical areas outside those earmarked for the Referendum want to be part of the Referendum.

President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede, who is also the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State in the Volta region, made this known in Kumasi at the 3rd General Meeting of the House.

According to Togbe Afede, the chiefs of Lolobi and Akpafu in the Volta Region have sworn never to be part of the proposed Oti Region while chiefs of Chereponi, through the Dagbon Traditional Council in the Northern region have also taken similar stance.

The fourth petitioners, Togbe Afede noted, are from the Volta Region who want to vote during the Referendum since the creation of the new region affects them also.

The President of the National House of Chiefs noted that, the creation of the new regions would automatically alter the boundaries of existing political regions which also form part of the planned Referendum.

Togbe Afede was worried that issues are being raised about the report of the Commission of Inquiry into the creation of the regions. He said chiefs cannot be apathetic or spectators in such important matters that affect the country’s peace, unity and development.

Togbe Afede however, appealed to all those for and against the creation of the new regions to uphold the truth for the sake of Ghana. He also spoke about vigilantism which has the potential of threatening the peace and unity of the country.
