Some Ghanaians have expressed shock at the latest Corruption Perception Index (CPI) in which Ghana scored 43 out of 100 and was ranked 75 out of 180 countries regardless of the myriad of corruption cases involving government officials.
However, speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, the Programmes Manager at the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Mary Awelana Addah, said although the 2020 CPI score indicates that Ghana gained two points compared to the 2019 score of 41, it is insignificant.
She explained that Ghana could have done better if issues of corruption had been handled well.
Mrs. Addah suggested the strengthening of Agencies with oversight responsibility to perform effectively without political interference.
She stressed the need for the elimination of unnecessary bureaucracies in such institutions as well as a review of the investigations and sanctions regime to ensure that the country is not shortchanged.
