After a team of Medical scientists and doctors brought to the fore the efficacy of hydrogen peroxide towards protection against Covid-19, the chemical has come under high demand by the public.
In an interview with some pharmacists in Accra, some indicated that the demand is high in some shops depending on the price it is sold at and the brand people prefer. Some said their prices are cheaper hence more demanding of the chemical.
Hydrogen peroxide H2O2 at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic was suggested as one of the drugs that can fight against the virus. Hydrogen peroxide destroys bacteria by releasing oxygen as foams which inhibits their survival.
Several studies have shown that the drug in a 3% concentration kills the virus within one to 20 minutes and unfortunately, coronavirus and the influenza family could not fight it.
When a Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Andrew Aryeetey came out to say the chemical is suitable to fight against the virus, the FDA reported a shortage of it due to panic buying of persons who want to protect themselves against the virus. Thus, Radio Ghana visited some pharmacy shops to ascertain the level of patronage of the drug. They tell us that there has been high demand recently.
Others say prices vary due to high demand for the product and the brand.
Hydrogen peroxide according to Professor Aryeetey and the team members, using 1% of the liquid for mouth washing and throat gargling protects one against the virus.
