The people of La and its environs have lamented the stalling of the La General Hospital project after the facility was demolished last year for reconstruction.
A visit by GBC NEWS to the site to assess progress of work revealed the weedy nature of the place with blocks, gravels and heaps of sand with no construction ongoing.
Some residents who spoke to GBC NEWS said the site has been turned into a football park and a grazing grounds for horses.
They said the temporary facility given them to access health care is not convenient, because it cannot accommodate a lot of patients. They called on government to as a matter of urgency get the contractor back on site.
The La General Hospital serves numerous people in and around Osu, LA, Teshie and other areas demolished and closed. However, the facility was closed to the public in March 2020 to undergo expansion due to overcrowding.
Almost a year after President Akufo-Addo cut the sod for its reconstruction, the site now looks completely deserted.
Residents and patients who visit the facility regularly complained to GBC NEWS, the inconveniences the closure has caused them. Some taxi drivers and traders bemoaned the adverse effects of the closure on their businesses.
The health of the people they say is the wealth of every nation. Aside from this, Ghana has a duty to improve on the universal access to primary health care in order to meet Sustainable Development Goal 3.
It is the expectation that government takes steps to resume work on the La General Hospital and all others that have been abandoned.
“The government said he will finish by two months time but the project is still lying there. They should have done it as they did when they were constructing the Ridge Hospital, it is creating inconvenience” a resident lamented.
” There is nothing going on here, we have locked all our shop, we thought after the sod cutting workers will be at site but there is nothing going on. The demolition and closure of the hospital has really affected us. We are appealing to government to reconstruct it for us” a trader added.
