The Government says it will complete the Saglemi housing project, in the Prampram district of the Greater Accra region, despite some challenges. The new Minister for Works and Housing, Mr. Francis Asenso Boakye, said this when he paid a working visit to some government projects sites in Greater Accra.
The working tour of the Minister for Works and Housing, Mr. Francis Asenso Boakye, to some government project sites in the greater Accra region, was for him to have a first-hand experience of the projects.
Mr. Asenso Boakye first visited the Saglemi housing project in the Prampram district of the Greater Accra region.
According to an official at the project site, of the 2100 acres of land allocated for the project, only 500 acres have been put to use, with projects at various stages of completion.
The initial housing units of the project was supposed to be five thousand but only one thousand five hundred have been started, with some completed but without fitting works, electricity, and water connected to them.
However, the place looked abandoned, with dusty floors. One could tell the site has been left to fate and herdsmen have turned its vegetation into greasing fields for their cattle, leaving cow dungs in their trail.
The Works and Housing Minister, disclosed that close to two hundred million Dollars have been invested into the project so far, which he believes was a great initiative, but the conception, design and implementation did not go well.
Mr. Asenso Boakye also visited other project sites, including the Tema Development Corporation’s (TDC) affordable housing at Kpone, 208 completed housing units at Community twenty-two, Tema, and Kaiser Flats at Tema Community four.
Ghana’s current housing deficit stands at two million. Officials believe that if all projects at the four sites are completed, the housing challenges in the country will be reduced.
