After some four decades since its establishment, the Post and Telecommunication building in Cape Coast near the High Court is rotting away with little hope of seeing better days. GBC News puts a magnifying glass on the old P and T building, a relic begging for one more chance to shine again.
The building was one of the legacies of Ghana’s first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. At a time when the use of telephones and computers were limited, sending messages to loved ones far away was only possible via post and on 4th November 1960, this Post and Telecommunications Corporation was established to do just that.
Oral history has it that it was during the unveiling of this edifice that Dr. Nkrumah announced the establishment of the University of Cape Coast instead of the proposed Teacher Training College after consultation with some officials in the region, especially one Mr Eddy Ampah.
At the peak of its operations, it is believed that the P and T corporation handled hundreds of bags of letters and mail and other services on a daily basis. When it fell on hard times and operations stalled, the premises served as an STC yard for sometime before finally being abandoned.
Residents of Cape Coast are worried that the state of the old P and T building is a disaster waiting to happen and are calling on city authorities to act swiftly.
