President Akufo-Addo has called for a bipartisan approach in dealing with the issues of illegal mining popularly called Galamsey.
He noted that Galamsey cannot be part of the country’s everyday politicking and encouraged Ghanaians to be the best protector of the nation’s land.
President Akufo-Addo stated this in Accra when he opened a national dialogue on small-scale mining.
He expressed his determination to enforce the laws on illegal mining, but not based on hearsay.
The national dialogue on small-scale mining which was at the request of President Akufo-Addo is to find solution to the lingering issues surrounding illegal mining in the country.
The two-day meeting has assembled all former Ministers of Mines under the 4th Republic, MPs from the various political divide, Traditional rulers, bankers, NGOs, and industry players.
After the meeting, a blueprint will be issued on how to end the menace. Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor who opened the meeting set the rules for the dialogue.
President of Ghana Chamber of Mines, Eric Asubonteng, pledged to work with government to identify ways to run responsible and sustainable small-scale mines.
Director of Finance at the National Small Scale Miners Association, Francis Opoku called for total collaboration from stakeholders in stemming the tide.
President Akufo-Addo said he is determined to strictly enforce the laws on illegal mining irrespective of who is at the receiving end. He noted that stamping out illegal mining remains his priority and urged all stakeholders to join in resolving the menace.
The President said mining will continue to be a danger to society and the environment if unapproved methods are used. He urged participants to deliberate on the issues devoid of politics, favouritism and come out with a communique that will stop illegal mining.
The conference will discuss the experiences, challenges, successes and future outlook of the Small Scale Mining sector in Ghana.
There will also be Presentations on mining and Preservation of the environment, sanctions for illegal small-scale mining under the Minerals and Mining Act, local best practices among others.
