The UN Population Fund says its 100 days’ publicity agenda on Sexual and Gender Based Violence is yielding positive results.

The Fund said the drive is to encourage more persons who suffer any form of violence to get access to support services.

UNFPA Representative to Ghana, Niyi Ojuolape who made this known said apart from legal and psychosocial support, the victims will also have access to free medical care which will speed up investigations into issues of abuse.

Niyi Ojuolape was speaking in an interview with GBC NEWS following the FUNDS Outreach Programmes on Sexual and Gender Based Violence at Sabon Zongo in Accra.

The Outreach has been replicated in other Zongo Communities in the country.

THE BOAME APP

The BOAME APP launched by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), was to provide services to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) survivors and other users. Established in partnership with the Domestic Violence Secretariat, of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), the Orange Support Centre is a landmark in the Ghanaian gender and SGBV setting, leveraging technology to put in place an integrated support system for SGBV survivors and victims through a mobile app, toll-free line call centre technology.

“After the launch of the Centre about two months ago, there have been numerous calls for support systems by victims of abuses,” Niyi Ojuolape stated. He explained that victims can access medical support after sustaining injuries from physical abuse.

The toll-free line for the Boame App is 0800-111-222 to access services of the Orange Support Centre.

The Secretary to the Chief of Sabun Zongo, Yussif Illiasu expressed gratitude to the UNFPA for the outreach programme.

“Issues of sexual based violence are common among the Zongo’s,” he said. However, plans are far advanced to serve as mediators for victims of such abuses.

The Assemblyman for the area, Yakubu Abana Asoke, encouraged members of the Zongo Community to feel free to report issues of any form of violence for the needed redress.

Residents who spoke to GBC NEWS after the programme on condition of anonymity stated that issues of abuse are rampant in their community and expressed gratitude for the UNFPA for introducing them to the BOAME APP.
