Staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Tema Region has launched a week-long celebration to commemorate this year’s May Day.
The programme line-up for the week includes; public education, revenue mobilization, health screening, health talk, and thanksgiving.
The celebration which is a collaboration between the Senior and Junior Staff Unions is on the theme: “Economic recovery in the era of COVID-19, the role of social partners”.
Mr Emmanuel Akinie, General Manager of ECG, Tema Region launching the week recounted the impact of COVID-19 on many businesses globally and the loss of jobs by some in Ghana adding that ECG staff were however lucky not to have lost their jobs even though some might have additional incomes cut off.
Mr Akinie said the pandemic led to alteration of most of the company’s activities, as they operated at half strength to ensure all protocols especially social distancing was adhered to.
He said that throughout the COVID-19 period, management ensured that all necessary personal protective equipment for the safety of workers was provided and commended them for their co-operation and professionalism during the period.
He also praised the unions for embarking on the recent revenue mobilization exercise, which ensured that those owing the Company cleared their debts.
Mr Emmanuel Appoe, Tema Regional ECG Engineer, encouraged staff to use the celebration to take stock of their relations with customers, and their performances at work for the previous years.
Mr Appoe said the attitude of some staff towards customers was not the best, “if we want to progress as a company, then we must change somethings as staff including our mindset and skillset”.
Mr Christopher Apawu, ECG Tema Regional Senior Staff Chairman, reminded workers that the sustenance of the company depended on their output and commitment and therefore urged them to be disciplined in their work.
There were solidarity messages from the Industrial Relations Officer, Junior Staff Union, Regional Accountant, and Mr Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi, General Secretary of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) who urged management not to take themselves out of the various unions as their destinies at the company was tied to them.
