The best students in the recent West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination have conferred with President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House.
The President expressed the gratitude of the nation to the students for their visit and urged them to achieve greater laurels for the Nation.
President Akufo-Addo believes the level of successes chalked up by the Students has vindicated the government for introducing the free SHS.
Ghana swept all the top three International Excellence awards instituted by the West African Examinations Council which seeks to honour candidates with outstanding performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Cecil Tetteh Kumah formerly of Mfantsipim School was adjudged the Overall Best Student in the 2020 WASSCE written by more than two million candidates from the five participating countries. He had a total score of 650.
The second Overall Best student went to Godfred Aseda Obeng from Hope College at Gomoa Fete. Master Obeng had a total score of 625 while Afua Manukure Ansah, who took the Overall Third Best, had a total score of 624.
Out of the 465 students who had eight As, 411 were from Ghana.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adu Twum thanked the students for justifying the investment made in them. He said School enrolment has increased drastically because of the implementation of the FREE SHS.
President Akufo-Addo said government will continue to invest in education to make it accessible to all. He was very proud of the achievements of the students and made a personal pledge to continue to follow and monitor their progress. He said Ghana can only develop if its human resources are developed.
Some of the students are on Scholarship abroad and the rest in Ghana. Those present thanked President Akufo-Addo for giving them the opportunity to meet him.
