ECOWAS negotiators of Climate Change meet in Accra

Environmental experts from ECOWAS countries who contribute to climate change negotiations have met in Accra.
The three day conference focused on identifying points of interest for sub region regarding the Paris Agreement among other climate issues.
The outcomes will feed into a continental position to be presented by the African Group of Negotiators during COP 24 in Katowice, Poland which will be held in December.
The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC.
It aims to keep the increasing global average temperature to blow two degree Celsius. After the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015 and its ratification by most countries in Morocco, modalities and rules for its implementation are yet to be defined.
African Negotiators, AGN have been negotiating the continent’s interest. It is in this direction that Environmental experts met in Accra to come out with inputs that will assist the AGN.
They discussed activities planned by member countries and regional organisations during COP 24 and agreed on a plan for by sub region.
The Director, Environment of the ECOWAS Commission in Nigeria, Dr Johnson Boanuh said an action plan towards the implementation of Paris Agreement is expected to be out during COP 24.
He said, “the experts will be called upon to examine the findings of a study ongoing. In relation to implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions, NDC’s of member countries.”
A Principal Programme Officer, Climate Vulnerability and Adaptation of the Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana, Antwi Boasiako Amoah said the AGN met alongside the African ministers of Environment meeting, AMCEN.
He explained that The technical Negotiators will meet three weeks before the COPq.
