The Ghana Water Company Limited has drastically reduced its output from four million gallons a day to just a million to residents in Obuasi and its surroundings.

This is as a result of the negative impact of illegal mining.

Currently, more than 140,000 people in the area are without the required volume of potable water.

Public Relations Officer of the Company, Stanley Martey, told GBC’s Nathaniel Nartey that the situation is likely to spread to other parts of the country where illegal mining activities are going on.

Meanwhile, the Small Scale Miners Association believes MMDCEs who have been put in charge of the Community Mining Programme are responsible for the persistence of galamsey activities.

Public Relations Officer of the Association, Benjamin Annan, says most of his members are no longer in the business as they are now into farming following the burning of their excavators by security personnel deployed to stamp out illegal mining.
