Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio Upper West has held a capacity building workshop for the Staff of the station in Wa.
The event was to help sharpen the skills of participants in proposal writing to help the Corporation to reposition itself financially in the midst of stiff competition in the broadcasting industry.
GBC has decided to move away from solely providing Public Service Broadcasting to making money to supplement the annual budget from the government.
Opening the workshop, the Acting Upper West Regional Director of GBC, Christopher Asiedu observed that the government has over the years supported the Corporation to survive as a state institution.
He continued that GBC has come to the realisation that it has to do more to sustain itself financially and further improve the quality of its news and programming to remain relevant in a competitive digital broadcasting industry.
Mr Asiedu indicated that management in Accra has given each of the regional and district stations of the corporation revenue targets to achieve by the close of the year and talked about what is expected at the end of the training.
He said: “It is our expectation that at the end of the workshop, the skills and knowledge acquired will help uplift the image of Radio Upper West and corporate GBC in the region in the midst of operational challenges. Our efforts should not be thwarted by the absence of a station vehicle, insufficient motivation and other challenges.’’
The Acting Regional Director continued that with the limited resources, let us forge ahead with a common sense of purpose. Accra has assured us of addressing these challenges. Mr. Asiedu stated that management is on course to rebrand Radio Upper West and also improve the quality of programmes to attract more audience, saying this workshop is one of the strategies.
He further pointed out that we need funds and good programs to give the station a new image.
“Let us all support the vision to consolidate our reputation as the authentic and trusted voice of Upper West Region,” Mr Asiedu emphasised.
The resource person for the workshop was Dr. Eunice Yorgri of Simon Diendong Dombo University for Business and Integrated Development Studies.
