Immunologist and Research Fellow at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens, Dr. Yaw Bediako has called for innovative and robust Antigen Testing for covid 19.
This he said will ensure swift detection and intervention programmes to curtail covid 19 complications, especially in schools.
Dr. Bediako who was speaking on GBC’s current affairs programme “Talking Point”, noted that antigen testing is cheaper and effective.
He said the surge in Ghana’s covid-19 cases is a global phenomenon as result of the Delta variant which is highly transmissible and immune invasive.
He said there is also pandemic fatigue.
Dr. Bediako asked the Ghana Health Service to collaborate with institutions such as the Environmental Protection Agency to explore other ways of detecting the virus early.
Ghana has seen a rise in covid 19 cases recently.
Available statistics on the Ghana Health Service portal revealed that four more persons have succumbed to the coronavirus disease.
All deaths occurred on Tuesday, July 13, bringing the deaths recorded so far to 810. Also, the country’s Covid-19 cases did not show signs of slowing as the data captured as many as 156 new cases as of July 13.
Research Fellow, Department of Health Policy Management New York University School of Global Public Health Nana Kofi Quakyi, was unhappy with the country’s vaccination drive, saying it can obscure efforts at curtailing the disease.
