Beleaguered General Secretary of the People National Convention, PNC, Janet Nabilla has described her suspension from the party as illegal. She said she does not recognize any purported meeting by Executives of the Party in Accra to suspend her, describing it as a family and friends gathering. According to her, she remains the substantive General Secretary of the Party and will not accept any decision by any individual or group within the party to kick her out of office, describing Saturday August 28, 2021 meeting in Accra, as illegal. She told GBC News in an interview that she has not been officially notified of any suspension.
‘’It is not real, I myself, I have not received any letter from anybody’’, she stated.
On the question of how she heard of the suspension, Madam Nabila said she received the information from the media.
‘’I heard it in the media, someone called me to ask what I thought, I never knew, I didn’t even know there was a NEC meeting, in the first place the NEC meeting held yesterday was illegal. It was a family and friends meeting; how can family and friends take any decision about suspension? Madama Nabilla questioned.
On whether she is not on a serious collision course with her party? Madam Nabilla responded No. She said she had questioned some expenditure matters in the party and believes that is what has generated the agitations and backlash within the party leadership.
Awingobit on Nabila Suspension
Meanwhile, Former Presidential Candidate of the PNC, Samson Asaki Awingobit has said the decision by the National Executive Committee to suspend the General Secretary of the party without recourse to proper procedures cannot be overlooked as it has far-reaching implications on the integrity of the party. Speaking to GBC News Mr. Awingobit said as much the NEC has the mandate to take decisions that would best serve the interest of the party, it must know that the PNC is a party that is governed by laws and any decision must be in tandem with the party’s Constitution.
”Per the PNC’s Constitution, a meeting by NEC to suspend an officer of the party requires the attendance of more than half of Regional Chairpersons, failure to do so implies that a quorum would not be formed per the dictates of the Constitution”. Mr. Awingobit stated.
Background:
The People’s National Convention had stated that it had suspended its General Secretary, Janet Nabila. The decision was taken after an emergency National Executive Council meeting in Accra on Saturday, August 28, 2021.
The meeting lasted for more than 3 hours with the entire session held behind closed doors. It was unclear the nature of issues that resulted in the party leader’s suspension.
Speaking to Journalists after the meeting, the Chairman of the PNC, Moses Dani-Baah, said he is confident that the suspension of Janet Nabila will bring stability to the party and help it focus on the 2024 general election
Mr. Dani-Baah stated that the conduct of the General Secretary since the party’s last congress in 2020 had led to various challenges for the party, adding that the absence of Janet Nabila in the party will not affect it in any way.
