The Government through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Minerals Commission has inaugurated a Community Mining Project at Kwaebibierem Akyem in the Eastern Region.

The Community Mining Programme is aimed at formalizing mining in selected communities across the country.

Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and MP for Tarkwa Nsuaem, George Mireku Duker, reiterated the government’s determination to encourage and ensure responsible mining, at all levels in the mining sector.

He stressed that the government under President Akufo Addo is not against mining, but expects that miners whether large or small scale, conduct their operations in a more responsible, sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.

The Community Mining Project is a novel mining model introduced by the Akufo Addo government to address some of the underlying causes of illegal mining also known as galamsey, within the mining communities throughout the country. As provided for within small-scale mining, the scheme is reserved for only Ghanaian citizens but with an emphasis on host mining communities.

Deputy Minister for Land and natural resources, George Mireku Duker emphasized the need for miners to keep their mining operations apt, devoid of infighting. He said they should ensure peace in their areas of operations.

MP for Kade, Alex Kwadwo Agyare said the community will establish a taskforce that will be in-charge of monitoring the activities of the miners to ensure responsible mining.

With at least one community mine expected to be set up in each of the mining districts in the country, the community mines will provide employment for more than 2000 youth while the Government anticipates to rake in more revenue.
