President Akufo-Addo has urged the Police and other security agencies to deal decisively with the threats posed by dangerous, criminals, and criminal syndicate.
He said government on her part will give them as much support and cooperation in the fight. President Akufo-Addo was speaking at the National Police Training Academy for the 50th Cadet Officers Graduation parade.
“I am aware that recent incidents of violent crimes in some parts of the country have generated safety and security concerns from several sections of the populace. I want to assure Ghanaians that the Police Service and indeed all the other security services are determined to deal decisively with threats posed by dangerous criminals and criminal syndicates,” President Akufo-Addo said.
In all 129 Officers made up of 6 Cadet Officers and 123 Officers Cardet were commissioned as Superintendent of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Assistant Superintendent of Police. Despite a light downpour, the Police band, the graduands and the Mount Squadron performed a splendid and colourful display to the admiration of the Review Officer and family and friends present.
President Akufo-Addo who was the Review Officer inspected the guard of honour amid the light downpour. The President was impressed with the spectacular drill by the Police band. President Akufo-Addo pledged the commitment of his government to resource the police service. Giving account of logistics and manpower needs of the service, President Akufo-Addo said five hundred and sixty-eight vehicles, including 15 operational buses have been presented by the government to the service.
Apart from the existing Formed Police Unit, FPU in Accra an additional 22 armored vehicle had been procured for use by the FPU. He said FPU units will be established in all regions. The Police Service, the President noted will take delivery of three helicopters made up of two light attack helicopters and one Airbus 350 helicopter in November 2021 to enhance its work.
Also, a Training school has been completed and 6 Officers who will fly these helicopters have completed their training in South Africa. While the government is playing her role in equipping the Police, President Akufo-Addo urged them to deal with new threats of crime in the country.
“We can help them succeed in this endeavor if we urge the Police and the other security services on and give them as much support and cooperation in the fight as we can.”
He asked the Police to maintain high level of discipline and commended the Acting IGP for the level of Professionalism exhibited since his appointment.
‘While government does its utmost best to equip, resource and retool the Police Service, it is important that discipline prevails throughout the service. This is a charge I give the Acting Inspector General of Police and the entire Police administration.”
“Without discipline and effective supervision, winning public confidence and support to fight crime will be very problematic. The detection and prevention of crime are shared responsibilities between the Police and the public, and mutual respect, confidence and support are required to achieve these goals,” President Akufo-Addo noted.
Officers who distinguished themselves were honoured with Ernest Kwofie, sweeping the overall all best Cadet Officer. He was presented with the sword of honour.
