The Public Affairs Unit of the Volta Regional Police Command has begun a Sexual Abuse Preventive Programme in Basic Schools in the region as part of its Child-Friendly Policing Mechanisms.
The initiative aims to educate school children about all forms of Sexual Sbuse and crimes against children to enable them report to the appropriate quarters whenever they are abused.
At the maiden engagement with Basic School Children in Ho, Head of Public Affairs Unit at the Command, DSP Effia Tenge noted that crime and abuse against children is on the rise in the country, but some abused children are unable to speak up due to lack of sex education among kids.
The maiden edition of the Sexual Abuse Preventive programme by the Volta Regional Police Command was held at the Treasures Christian School in Ho. The school children were taken through all forms of Sexual Abuse and Crimes and were encouraged to speak up when they go through such traumatic experiences.
DSP Effia Tenge bemoaned that statistics with regard to defilements and other forms of sexual abuse against children has been on a record high in the region, since the beginning of the yea, hence, the initiative.
” Though the Police have been arresting perpetrators of such crimes, there is the need for children to be empowered to speak up when they go through such ordeals”, she noted.
The Proprietress of Treasures Christian School in Ho, Irene Anumah was optimistic that the program will create the awareness and broaden the knowledge of pupils about sexual abuse against them.
The pupils were also educated on practical basic policing gadgets.
