Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey has passed on. Mr. Ashitey, 67, who was also a former Minister of State, and former Member of Parliament for Tema East, died Friday January 7, 2021 at the International Maritime Hospital in Tema, after a short illness.
Mr. Ashitey served as MP for the Tema East constituency in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Parliaments of the 4th Republic.
During his tenure as Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, NPP, he led the Party to retain majority of the Parliamentary seats in the 2016 General Election.
He reportedly returned from his routine medical checkup in the US about a week ago, and had hosted some friends and family members in the afternoon prior to his demise at the hospital.
Meanwhile, tributes are pouring in, eulogizing Mr. Ashitey. Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in a post on his Facebook page, expressed his condolences to the Ashitey family.
He said his thoughts are with them at this difficult period.
Until his demise, Ishmael Ashitey was a Member of the National Executive Committee of the NPP and member of the Party’s National Council.
