Effective January 17, transport fares are to go up by 40%. This is according to the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana. Speaking with GBC News, Public Relations Officer of the Association David Agboado says the 40% increase is justified.

This is because the price of fuel, vehicle spare parts and other commodities are still high, making it impossible to continue to charge the current fares.

He told Nathaniel Nartey that the Association is implementing the 40% increase without prior notice to the Ministry of Transport because feedback from previous meetings have not been encouraging.

”The reason why we want to increase our fares is that these days the cost of business is very high and unbearable and this warrants us to increase the fares by 40%”.
”Responding to concerns of affordability of the transport fares when they go up, Mr Agboado said “oh yes we are sure our passengers can afford it.
Pure water went up and we are all buying it so they can afford it.”

“We didn’t inform the Minister of Transport about the increase because when you go to him, it will be the same old story”, he stated.
