Cameroon and Chelsea legend Geremi Njitap has expressed his disappointment with the performance of Ghana’s Black Stars at the 2021 AFCON tournament.
In a group featuring Morocco, Gabon, and debutantes Comoros, the Black Stars finished bottom of Group C with just a point from 3 games and a deficit goal aggregate of -2.
The display in Garoua culminated in Ghana’s worst-ever performance at the AFCON tournament which saw the Black Stars finish. Hitherto the performance in Cameroon, the one-time West African powerhouse had been eliminated four times at the group stage from the tournament but had never finished at the basement of the table.
Ghana’s display has left many, home and abroad, shocked and disappointed and Njitap, who played against the Black Stars in several AFCON tournaments including 2000 and 2008 has expressed his disappointment with the performance of Ghana.
“I’m very disappointed because as a former player I know that Ghana used to be among the favourites all the time in AFCON. But, I am very surprised and disappointed that they have been knocked out in the first round. I don’t know what happened. Maybe something happened because it is not only me who is surprised but also a lot of fans from Ghana. I will speak with my friend Tony [Baffoe] because he is close to the team. He is the one to give me a good reason why the team performed this way because if you look at the squad that Ghana has it is surprising that they have been knocked out in the first round,” he told Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s Benjamin Willie Graham in an exclusive chat.
The Ghanaian contingent has arrived in Accra following their abysmal showing at the tournament.
