Renowned Sports Journalist, Jerome Otchere, says it is about the time managers of the country’s football took the public seriously. For him, it is such which is gradually engendering apathy among Ghanaian football lovers, adding ”over the period the public is losing confidence the right things are being done in the country’s football”.
“People want to be part of whatever Ghana is doing on the football scene, but these same people who are so passionate about our game do not believe the right things are being done”.
Mr. Otchere was a Panellist on the GBC programme ”Saving Our Passion” on GTV Sports + which seeks to map out strategies to whip up interest of Ghanaians in football.
Making reference to the abysmal performance of the Black Stars in the 2021 AFCON, in Cameroon, Mr. Otchere, said the performance of the Black Stars which is the team’s worst performance, should have been enough reasons for the GFA President, Kurt Okraku to have apologised to Ghanaians to repose confidence in them.
“It’s the worst AFCON in Ghana’s history, if you understand the gravity of the situation of Ghana going to an AFCON and exiting without winning a match under your reign, it’s never happened, but under your reign it happened. The first thing he should have done was to adopt an apologetic approach, tell the public that look, it was bad, we know it was bad, but that is why you have put us there, have confidence in us, we believe we can fix it, and we are going to fix it.
For Mr. Otchere, the FA President dismissing such concerns gives room for people to criticise him.
“But when he was asked, do you have any apology for Ghana or Ghanaians he said dismissively Ghanaians have the right to express any opinion they have. So, if people criticise you, you have asked for it”, the Sports Journalist pointed out.
