Ghana evacuates 460 students from Ukraine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has so far evacuated more than 460 students from Ukraine, some of whom are en route to Poland, Romania and other neighboring countries. Giving a breakdown of the number of students evacuated so far Sector Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway noted that government will do all it can to ensure safety of Ghanaians. Since last week when Russia launched an attack on Ukraine in what has attracted global attention, Ghana, like many other countries has been involved in frantic efforts to evacuate her citizens in Ukraine. Relatives of persons including students living in Ukraine have also been anxious about the situation.

”The deteriorating military situation in Ukraine directly impacts on the safety and security of Ghanaian nationals, including about 1000 students in that country, twenty-seven of these students are on the government of Ghana scholarships (scholarships secretariat), while the rest are predominantly self sponsored students. Let me state categorically that although most of the students went there on their own, government has a responsibility to all of them to ensure their safety and that we will do ”, the Foreign Affairs Minister stated.
