Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has challenged the Ghana Female National U-20 Team also known as the Black Princesses to put in their best efforts and make Ghana proud at the upcoming world cup in Costa Rica.
Commending the team for qualifying for six consecutive times, Vice President Bawumia was optimistic that the team will break the jinx of not going beyond the group stages.
He pledged the government’s continuous support to female sports.
He made these remarks when the team led by a delegation from the Ghana Football Association paid a courtesy call at the Jubilee House.
The Ghana female national U-20 team qualified to the FIFA U-20 women’s World Cup 2022 after beating Ethiopia in the qualifier in Addis Ababa.
Vice President Bawumia outlined some of the infrastructure undertaken by the government to make the sports industry more vibrant and said the country can now boast of more Astro turfs across the country. He touched on some ongoing projects. He urged the team to bring home the cup.
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha said government’s support to the sports industry has yielded positive results. He applauded the female under 20 Black Princesses for qualifying.
The President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku in a remark said the women have for 6 consecutive times qualified for the World Cup although they have not received much attention as compared to their male counterparts.
It is for this reason that their efforts are being recognized. He said the GFA will continue to invest in female sports to unearth more talents. He was optimistic that the Black Princesses will shine on the global stage
The Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare assured the National female team of her support. She urged them to make the country proud.
The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup is slated for Costa Rica in August 2022.
