The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Convention People’s Party, CPP, Abdul Salam has called for cool heads to prevail in finding an amicable resolution of the crisis that has hit the party at its national leadership.
To this end, the Regional Secretary is calling for an Emergency National Executive Committee’s Meeting not only to immediately reinstate the General Secretary, Nana Yaa Jantua and the two other National officers relieved of their elected positions after a recent Central Committee Meeting but also to take a firm decision for an out of Court settlement of the legal challenge against the National Chairperson.
In an interview with Correspondent Nicholas Osei-Wusu in Kumasi, Mr. Salam disagreed that the CPP its crisis.
The Regional Secretary said though the National Chairperson knows and has accepted that she did not win the legal mandate of the last CPP decentralized delegates Congress to lead the party, exceptional circumstances at the time forced the party to allow her to be installed as the winner and that it is still possible for the National Executives Committee to permit her to hold on to her position should she stop antagonising the elected national officers of the party for her parochial interest.
“It is interesting that the National Chairperson knows for a fact that she did not win the last Delegates Congress and claims she did not know about the party’s Constitution which says one must obtain more than 50% of the valid votes cast at Congress. Ignorance is no excuse and so why is she rather the one pushing out those validly elected”, Mr. Salam wondered.
He blamed the party’s Committee under the Chairmanship of Mr. R. O. Frimpong, that was responsible for the decentralized Congress which impressed upon the party at the time to allow her to be sworn in due to time constraint considering the closeness of the event to the national elections which COVID-19 had affected it’s organization.
The Regional Secretary said ‘the fact that the party has compromised to allow her lead the party as it’s National Chairperson does not take away the right of individuals in the party to use the courts to correct the wrongs”, he insisted.
Mr. Salam assured however, if the three ‘dismissed’ national officers are reinstated, it is still possible that she could be allowed to complete the term as the National Chairperson while urging the General Secretary and the two others to withdraw the court case for an amicable settlement in the interest of the party.
