The National Union of Ghana Students, NUGS and the Students Representative Council, SRC of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, are mobilizing funds to pay the fees for three thousand out of the six thousand students deferred by the University for defaulting in fee payment.
President of NUGS, Dennis Appiah Larbi, in an interview with the GNA, said the Union will ensure every student’s interest is met. The NUGS President indicated that they have been able to negotiate with authorities for the deferment of the students to be annulled once they are able to pay the arrears.
He said discussions have begun with stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education on the issue. Mr. Larbi described the decision by the University as “harsh”, but assured the students thatNUGS will do its best to ensure their deferment is reversed so they return to campus. More than six thousand students of the KNUST have been deferred due to delays in payment of user fees.
The University Relations Officer, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, alleged that some of the affected students had invested their fees in ventures, including online taxi services, and gambling, and are waiting to recoup their investments to pay.
