The Director of Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) has disclosed that most people see marriage as a form of belongingness or prestige, the reason they stay in abusive marriages.

She gave away this information on the Breakfast Show on GTV, on Tuesday, April 26, 2022.

The Director explained that most people actually care about the state of the family especially the husband and children as compared to the well being of the individual which makes the person sort of feel unimportant.

Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner.

She again added that, “in this modern era, culture has a way of placing women in an environment where they tend to be unnecessarily submissive to their spouses, because women can be submitted to being beaten or submit to love”.

“If someone loves you, they treat you with love and respect”, she says.

The DOVVSU Director noted their services can be accessed at any Ghana Police Service platforms.
