The President of All Nations University in Koforidua, Dr. Samuel Donkor, has announced that the University will soon begin courses in Emergency Medicine Technology and Cyber Security programmes in addition to the already 16 accredited programmes the school is running.
Dr. Donkor added that the teaching and research focus of the institution is to develop medical instruments to solve medical challenges in the country and beyond.
Speaking during a two-day Conference of the Ghana Society of Biomedical Engineers, GSBE 3rd National Conference at the All Nations University in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, mentioned some training the institution provides its students to produce quality and hands-on graduates.
He noted, that the emergence of Covid-19 has exposed some weaknesses in the health system in the country.
The Head of Biomedical Planning Unit in Ghana, Dr. Polycarp Asman speaking on the topic, “Bridging the Academia and Industry in Biomedical Engineering for Quality Workforce” noted that most of the teachings of Biomedical Engineers are basic with little or no additional professional or vocational training.
He added that this issue has created a missing gap of knowledge for its professionals to work effectively and efficiently.
Dr. Asman mentioned some challenges confronting the Association.
The Deputy Director of the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council, Stella Panwum, delivering the speech on behalf of the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, noted that, the role played by Biomedical Engineers in the healthcare delivery system cannot be underestimated.
He, therefore, implored other professionals especially healthcare givers and administrators to be very accommodating to them in their health facilities.
The two-day conference is on the theme “Harnessing the Biomedical Engineering and Technology Workforce, A key for the delivery of Quality Healthcare in Ghana.
